The theme shown here is the American Dream. The idea that anyone can have anything as long as they work hard and have a positive attitude.
This shows that Lennie doesn't really understand what he did was wrong because his concept is that he wasnt doing any harm.

It's foreshadowing that something bad might happen later on or they might have to end up leaving.
