  • In 1846, The Native American population in California was approximately 150,000. There were also Californians living in California, Mexicans. The Mexican-American War began. These are two Native Americans helping each other.
  • ...hmm...oh yes! I saw it going toward the mountains.
  • In 1848, January 24 Gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California. Newspapers began reporting the discovery of gold. Populations of cities in California dropped as people left to mine gold. Everyone was looking for gold, farmers, doctors, lawyers, and priests.
  • What in tarnations?!

  • Oh my god...GOLD! IT'S GOLD! I found gold!
  • I can't believe I traveled all the way from England to California only to have found no gold at all! How am I supposed to tell my wife and children back at home?!
  • Agriculture, shipping, trade grew to meet the demand for food and other goods. Many people who arrived looking for gold stayed to farm or run a business. During 1849, a miner found 1,000 people as well as a large number of hotels, stores, groceries, bakeries and gambling houses. Merchants made enormous profits by pricing demanded items and necessities however they wished.
  • I know what you can do, you start your own business, I can help you out, Harry. Merchants make a lot of money in California. Harry, not all of us can strike it rich.
