  • 1) Structural: The shell defends off predators.2) Structural: The claws allow them to grab prey easily.3) Structural: They can pull their head, arms and legs into their body.4) Physiological: the heart of the freshwater turtle has a functional ventricular septal defect. This adaptation allows the turtle to shunt the flow of blood from its left to right ventricle when it is on land.5) Behavioral: A turtle can hold its breathe for a very long time while under water to allow the turtle to hunt for food.
