  • "Fair is foul, and foul is fair" (1.1.12).
  • "Go pronounce his present death, and with his former title, greet Macbeth" (1.2.65-66).
  • "All hail, Macbeth. Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis" (1.3.48).
  • "All hail Macbeth. Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor" (1.3.49).
  • "All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter" (1.3.50).
  • 1.1: The three witches plan to meet Macbeth at the desert wasteland after the battle, before sunset.
  • "That very frankly he has confessed his treasons, implored your highness' pardon, and set forth a deep repentance" (1.4.5-7).
  • 1.2: The Thane of Cawdor betrayed the King, so the King instructs the Thane of Ross to have the Thane of Cawdor killed, and to tell Macbeth that he will be the new Thane of Cawdor.
  • "Whiles I stood rapt in the wonder of it, came missives from the king, who all-hailed me'Thane of Cawdor'" (1.5.5-7)
  • 1.3: The three witches reveal to Macbeth and Banquo that Macbeth does/will hold the titles of Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King.
  • "All our service. . . were poor and single business to contend against those honors deep and broad wherewith your majesty loads our house" (1.6.15-19).
  • 1.4: The King's son, Malcolm, tells him that before the Thane of Cawdor was killed, he confessed and begged for forgiveness.
  • 1.5: Lady Macbeth reads a letter from Macbeth explaining how he is now the Thane of Cawdor. He also tells her that the witches said he will one day be the king. Lady Macbeth decides that they should kill the king.
  • 1.6: The King thanks Lady Macbeth for meeting them, and she pretends to like him.
