- Morrison is a young lady who doesn't have much and gets paid by cleaning an older white rich woman's home. "All I had to do for the two dollars was clean Her house for a few hours after school."
- Morrison started to realize once she disappointed her boss it would affect how she could make her money. "I wanted to refuse, or atleast to complain, but I was afraid she would fire me, and I would lose the freedom the dollar gave me."
- Morrison's boss was just using her to get her house cleaned not to help morrison provide for her family. "She began to offer me her clothes, for a price. I bought a few, until my mother asked me if I really wanted to work for castoffs."
- Adkinson washes dishes but wants to be able to do the real job while working at Pizza Hut. "All new employees started by washing dishes and busing tables. If they proved their mettle, they learned to make pizzas, cut and serve them on wooden paddles.
- Adkinson wants to know why he is still washing dishes after weeks. "One slow midweek night, when I managed to catch up on dishes and clean out the sinks early, I asked Jeff when I could do something different. "Do you know why you are still doing dishes?" he asked. "Because you are still complaining about it."
- Adkinson finally is something more than a dishwasher. "For one of the first times in my life, I felt empowered. By my senior year, I was assistant manager, responsible for much of the bookkeeping, inventory, and scheduling. "
