Can you tell me the story of how a peaceful Maori settlement was raided by government troops at Parihaka?

Let me tell you a bit about the history of parihaka

The British came to invade Parihaka and came with over 1600 armed men, ready to attack.

It all started on November 5 th 1881

Year -1881

We shall attack Parihaka

Emergency Meeting

Whanau we must prepare for the arrival of the British troops, we will not fight we will be peaceful and welcoming, the children will dance and sing , while the woman make bread to offer the soldiers.

Welcome

Nau Mai

The soldiers didn't even look at the 500 or more loaves of bread that were baked , or the singing children, they marched right past and headed towards Te Whiti and Tohu.

Nooooo

The troops ordered the destruction of the village and took Te Whiti and Tohu to jail in the south island without any trial for 16 months.

the soldiers burned the houses and destroyed the village , without leadership Parihaka crumbled.

You two are coming with us

The village peacefully prepared for the arrival of the troops, they decided they would not fight and would instead welcome the newcomers to Parihaka

Tohu and Te Whiti were arrested and charged. 2 years later they were allowed to return to Parihaka where they continued their campain of protest through ploughing through the confiscated land. Tohu died in 1907, Te Whiti 11 months later. In June 2017, over 100 years later, the Crown apologised for the treatment of those at Parihaka
