The British had to leave the city of Boston, and try to capture another place. With America not backing off, the British gave control back to the Americans.
*sigh*Retreat
The British fought the colonists for the control of New York in order to get to the heart of the revolution, Boston.
The British were successfully able to capture New York City.
General George Washington did not want to surrender. He even didn't want to say retreat, but Thomas Mifflin convinced him to do so.
The British would not stop chasing after the Americans. This lead to a famous icy crossing of the Delaware River at the battle of Trenton.
At the beginning of the war, African Americans were not allowed to join the continental army. However, if they joined the British side they were allowed freedom.
