- I shall go back on foot, over the whole route, to see whether I can find it.
- "She left the ball at about 4o'clock in the morning and reached home via a quay. When she arrived she removed her wraps and suddenly she uttered a cry. She no longer had the necklace around her neck. At home..."
- Oh no! where have you lost it?
- Oh my god! Dear, I cannot find the diamond necklace that I borrowed.
- I'm so sorry!!!
- Since they can't find it, she and her husband decided to replace it with a one that looks identical. But, it cost more money than they make, and it takes them ten years to pay it off. After hard work and struggling for ten years, the couple pays off all of their debts.
- Just to look attractive for a night, I have ruined 10 years of my life.
- Now I realize that my condition was much better earlier.
- One day Mathilde is walking in the market and sees her friend that she borrowed the necklace from and decided to tell her what happened. The friend of her responds by telling her that the necklace was "false" or fake. The reader is left contemplating the extreme irony of the situation. As well as feeling extreme upset with the protagonist for her vanity and pride which cost her ten years of her life.
- WAIT WHAT?! WHAT?! OH NO! I am so foolish.
- OH NO! friend, the necklace that I gave you was a fake and it wasn't a real diamond.
