The British East India Company(EIC) First set up trade with India in the 1600s. In later years, they then started to take control of India. EIC forced their ways onto them because they believed they were superior.

Many Indians joined the EIC army but faced racial and religious discrimination. The Indians were already upset from the treatment they got but they reached the last straw with the ammunition. They were ordered to bite off the greased cartridges but the Indians disobeyed because it went against their religion. This sparked a rebellion.

Gandhi went to South Africa to do legal work where he was badly beaten by the British police. Gandhi then decided to use non-violent ways to change unjust laws. One of these ways would be by fasting. Gandhi would then go on to help India gain its independence.
