  • In 1887, American planters convinced King Kalakaua to amend Hawaii's constitution. They wanted the voting rights to be limited to the wealthy landowners, which were them.
  • Queen Liliuokalani Overthrown
  • A new U.S. tariff law imposed duties on previously duty-free Hawaiian sugar. This resulted in Hawaiian sugar becoming more expensive than American sugar, creating fear for a decreasing number of sales and profits for the sugar growers in Hawaii.
  • Sanford B. Dole With Benjamin Harrison
  • Can you annex Hawaii to the United States?
  • In 1891, King Kalakaua died, bringing his sister, Queen Liliuokalani, to the throne.
  • Hawaii Becomes U.S. Territory
  • Queen Liliuokalani abolished the constitution that had given political power to the white minority. American planters and U.S. officials responded quickly and forcefully, overthrowing the queen in 1893.

  • John Stevens ordered the United States Marines to help the rebels seize power. Sanford B. Dole asked President Benjamin Harrison to annex Hawaii to the United States.
  • Benjamin Harrison signed the treaty of annexation but wasn't able to get the senate approval prior to the presidency of Grover Cleveland. Cleveland found many Hawaiians disapproved the treaty. In 1897, William McKinley became president and his administration favored annexation. In 1898, Hawaii became an official U.S. territory with Sanford B. Dole as its first governor.
