- When Baba gives Amir the presents he bought for him after celebrating his 13th birthday with a big celebration inviting the entire town to his son's party, both Amir and Baba's reactions Amir describes as half-hearted. Baba assumes his son likes the present and asks him if he wants to go for a ride, Amir quickly declines but makes up for that declined offer by thanking him for the fireworks that were lit at his party the day before.
- Maybe later, I'm a little tired. Thanks for the fireworks.
- You like it? We could go for a ride.
- Once Baba leaves, Amir opens the other present his Baba gifted him. A blue-faced wristwatch with gold hands at its side. The watch, like other presents gets thrown aside and disregarded quickly by Amir. This scene shows the difference between Baba and Amir, how they truly don't see eye to eye even through gifts and interests. Baba still tried, gifting his son things that others could only wish for, but through Amir's reaction, the tension between them is inevitably there. The way Amir thanks him but denies the offer even after craving for that love and attention from his father furthermore pulls them apart.
