- On this day, February 4 of 1794, France has now decreed the abolition of slavery just.

- Concurrently, the French Revolution was taking place. So now, the French were fighting against the British, the Spanish, and the enslaved from Saint-Domingue. Foreseeing their defeat, the French issued decrees abolishing slavery
- With this news, the revolt leader, L’Ouverture, switched his loyalty to France. However, due to the alliance with France, Napoleon took advantage of the opportunity and re-established slavery as well as captured L'Ouverture to emphasize his power and authority
- After L'Ouverture was captured and eventually died in jail, the new revolt leader, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, led the slaves with aid from the British in what would be the final battle of the Haitian Revolution. This battle cemented the French loss in the war as well as the island of Saint-Domingue. Eventually, this became arguably the most successful slave revolt in history
