In the late 1900s, space was seen as a unknown world filled with opportunity. Soon, the Space Race began, which was a race of technological innovation which can be tied to the Cold War.In 1957, the Soviets had released the first satellite into space known as Sputnik, and four years later, they sent the first person into space, Yuri Gargarin.
But soon, the Americans started to surpass the Soviets. In 1969, the United States Apollo Project put the first people on the moon. After the Space Race, countries from across the world decided to unite to create the ISS(International Space Station.)

The invention of computers was extremely significant in the modern world. The first electronic computers were built in the 1940s. They were huge and very slow up until the invention of the silicon chip in 1958. After that, personal computers became much more popular.
Personal computers, which became popular in the 1970s, began to replace typewriters and account books in homes and businesses. In the 1970s, American researchers collabareted to find a way to connect computer systems. By the 1990s, the Internet had been created. The internet enabled people from across the world to communicate with eachother instantly. One third of the world uses the Internet today.

After World War ll, many lifesaving medical advances were made. Polio was a deadly disease that paralyzed and killed many people, including children and President FDR.The first polio vaccine was invented by Jonas Salk. HIs vaccine is still used today. Progress in anesthesia was made, making it much more effective. Prosthetic limbs started to be used, starting on war veterans. The first antibiotic, Penicillin, started to be commercially produced. More antibiotics started to be produced, saving many lives.
