- This scene is set in a dark, wooded area at night. Two girls are by a fire, with one of them dancing, when they’re suddenly caught by someone asking, "What on earth are you doing here?" Their secretive behavior sets the stage for the accusations of witchcraft that follow. This moment marks the beginning of the chaos in The Crucible.
