Odysseus and his men arrived at the land of the dead and started to perform Circe's ritual, which was to dig a pit, and sacrifice a black lamb and young goat, so they can talk to Tiresias.
Book Twelve
Thousands of spirits get attracted to the blood, then finds Tiresias. Tiresias tells him not to kill any of Helios's cows, or else all of Odysseus's crew will die, and he will suffer more long years at sea.

A flock of spirits rush to Odysseus, crying out to him. Overwhelmed, he calls his men and they sail away.
