Banquo tells Macbeth that he is going out riding with Fleance and will be back in time for dinner. Two killers are summoned by Macbeth to ambush and kill Banquo and Fleance.
Act 3 Scene 5
Due to all of their crimes, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth do not believe they can enjoy their royal status. Lady Macbeth makes an attempt to cheer up Macbeth. Macbeth keeps his wife in the dark about Banquo's murder as he continues to be corrupt.
Act 3 Scene 6
The two murderers find that Macbeth has sent a third murderer to help them ambush Banquo and Fleance. Banquo is killed and Fleance escapes.
After their return to the castle, the killers inform Macbeth of what happened. When Macbeth returns to the dinner, all of the chairs are taken. The last seat has been claimed by Banquo's ghost, which only Macbeth can see. After Macbeth grows enraged with the ghost, Lady Macbeth eventually orders their guests to leave.
Hecate is angry with the three witches for meddling in to Macbeth's life. She decides that they have to destroy Macbeth's life by making him see things and warping his view of himself.
Lennox discusses the previous occurrences with a lord. They come to the conclusion that Macbeth is a bad guy and that Fleance killed Banquo and Duncan's son killed Duncan. They also disclose that Malcolm and McDuff have traveled to England in order to gather forces to prepare for an invasion of Scotland.
