- San Francisco sailor Henry is trapped penniless in England because his ship sinks and he is caught up in an unusual gamble between two wealthy and eccentric brothers.
- They hand Henry an envelope. The reason for this is that one of them believes that the mere existence of the note will allow its holder to get what he needs, while the other maintains that he would actually have to change it to make it of any use.
- Henry is going to eat something at a bar but the owner does not have enough money to give him the change, so the owner tells him that he can come whenever he wants to eat and that he will pay him in the future.
- Henry tries to return it to the brothers, but the butler informs him that they have left the country for a month. He later finds a letter in the envelope, which explains the bet and where he is promised a job if he manages to avoid redeeming the ticket during that month.

- Henry is invited to a dinner for the wealthy because of his new popularity that he has achieved in London for the million pounds he got thanks to the brothers.
- In the end, Henry manages to keep the money and gets a steady job with a good salary.
