  • Let's go to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania to camp for the winter.
  • After Saratoga, the war was still a long way from being over with. General Washington and his men started on their way to Valley Forge to camp for the winter.
  • The men were starving and cold. The merchants and farmers preferred to sell to the British because they paid in gold.
  • Washington had two foreigners that would help the men. They needed to be trained for battle since many were unexperienced.
  • Battle of MonmouthSir Henry Clinton replaced General Howe. He ordered the men to retreat to New York where they could be supplied.
  • New JerseyWashington's men caught the British in their retreat. In the battle, General Washington kept his men fighting. That night, the British retreated across the Hudson River.
  • Baron Fredrick Von Stueben was put in charge of training the American soldiers for battle. He taught them drills and got them into shape. Marquis de Lafayette volunteered to raise the men's' spirits. He used his own money to buy them warm clothes.
