- As a child Clerc accidentally injured himself with fire this caused him go deaf. He was not able to go to school or make friends he spent alot of time in the village he grew up in.
- Clerc's bad teaching experience
- At the age of 12 Clerc went to Instiut National des duene where he finds Abbe De L'Epee (the father of deaf) and Jean Massieu who was both a teacher and friend for him.
- Clerc meets Gallaudet

- Massieu and others from the deaf school went to pettion the release of Abbe Sicard as a result Sicard was released
- First deaf school in America
- While at the deaf school Clerc was taught by Abbe Margaron who taught Clerc to start pronouncing words. Though this method was ineffective and caused his teacher to get violent with him. That experience later on lead Clerc to think of sign as a more effective way of communication then speaking for deaf people.
- Why can't you pronounce anything right!
- Sicard took Clerc and Massieu with him to England that is where Clerc met Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet at one of the lectures. Gallaudet asked to be taught sign by Clerc. Gallaudet had to return America soon and after seeing his skills from the classes he took he asked for Clerc to come with him. Clerc agreed to go with Sicard agreeing after much discussion.

- After coming to America Clerc and Gallaudent established a school for the deaf. The first student for this school was Alice Cogswell and the child of his neighbor.The name of this school was the American School for the deaf at Hartford it is also called Old Hartford. This school was the first deaf school in America.
