- Apart from everything there was one thing in the narrators' life that she longed for, and that was Hugh McIvoy. There is no word capable to describe him other than radiant.
- The narrator spent everyday in the bead quarry, rain or shine. However, one particular day in late April, the first bead she came across was the most perfect one she has ever seen a peach hued glass oblong dazzler. She knew exactly who to give it to...
- After the narrator had snuck the beads onto Hughs' desk, he came into the classroom and said, “Hey, who put this junk in my desk?” Everyone knew it was the narrator who put them there but they didn't bother to embarrass her further.
- Rachel Grenier, the girl practically everyone hated, was bullied everyday for how she looked. Pushed down the hill, mocked, harassed, there was no end to it. Until everyone heard about her father. One thing left the narrator surprised though, Rachel Grenier was the bead fairy.
- After hearing about Rachels' father, the narrator attended the funeral thinking she'd be the only one from school to show up. But there had been a few other kids who had shown up because of their parents.
