  • “My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking today. But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts.”
  • “How? Amontillado, A pipe? Impossible! And in the middle of the carnival!”
  • Middle
  • “And the [family] motto?”
  • "Nemo me impune lacessit."
  • End
  • to these words I [Montresor] hearkened in vain for a reply...I called aloud — “Fortunato!”No answer.
  • “For the love of God, Montresor!”
  • “Yes, for the love of God!”
  • During a carnival, Montresor begins his vengeance by kindly approaching Fortunato. He asks Fortunato to test the authenticity of his new Amontillado, a rare wine. Fortunato is drunk, vulnerable, and loves wine, so he falls into Montresor's plan and agrees to go to Montresor's palazzo and vaults.
  • As the characters travel through the underground vaults and catacombs, Fortunato gets more entangled in Montresor's revenge. Montresor also tricks Fortunato into drinking Medoc, making him more drunk. The two discuss Montresor's family motto, which means "no one attacks me with impunity." It reveals a family history of seeking revenge.
  • In the catacombs underneath a riverbed, Montresor achieves vengeance by entombing Fortunato in a wall. He taunts Fortunato, who finally accepts his fate of death, before placing the last brick. Montresor does not admit his guilt and finishes his crime. In the end, Montresor achieved his goal of punishing with impunity.
