Hester is very pleased to see that Dimmesdale is walking in the forest. She feels guilty and needs to tell him the Chillingworth isn't who he says he is and that he is actually her husband.
Coming to realization
Dimmesdale confesses his misery and unhappiness to Hester. He explains to her the guilt that has been torturing him.
Courage
Hester realizing how deeply her silence has permitted Dimmesdale to be tortured by her husband, seizes the moment to reveal Chillingworth's secret. Dimmesdale gets very angry and tells her that she is the reason he got tourtued.
Family
Dimmesdale forgives her and asks God to forgive them both. He believes that Chillingworth is the worst sinner of them all. Hester tells him that he can live a better life somewhere else. She tells him he doesn't have to go alone either.

Hester lets her hair down and takes off the scarlet letter and is ready to leave the Puritan colony.

Hester wants Dimmesdale and Pearl to get to know each other. She tells Dimmesdale that Pearl will love him.
