- Cults are “Highly organized groups led by a dynamic leader that exercises strong control” (Cults. The Gale Encyclopedia of Psychology). Members of a cult offer unquestionable loyalty to their leader and cause, and almost every aspect of their lives are controlled by this cult.
- People may join cults because we evolutionarily have to be part of a group for survival, but also to make us feel like we belong. This could also be because the part of the brain that expresses individualism has not yet grown and fully matured yet; hence why younger people are way more likely to join cults
- While the reason that we join cults is somewhat explainable using psychology, there is also evidence that supports the fact that cults are very damaging for a persons' mental state and should be avoided at all costs.
- You are impacted negatively in many ways if you are part of a cult for an extended amount of time. Some of those impacts and side effects may include:
- Development of major psychological disorders or illnesses More likely to develop trauma and have weakened critical thinking and reasoning skills Physical impacts may include: sleep deprivarion, low-protein diets, and constant supervision by the cult leaders. Psychological manipulation that may severely damage self image and overall mental health
- Don't joinn a cult! There are many other safe groups to join to find like-minded people
