Hayes is from Ohio, he was Cincinnati's city solicitor the Republican's platform continued their strong commitment to the civil rights of emancipated slaves.
What was the Compromise of 1877?
Tilden is from New York, he was a lawyer and party chairman of New York, the Democrat's platform wanted to continue the reconstruction.
Neither won at first but Hayes would have had the required votes while Tilden didn't but it was a controversy because the independent person in the group of 15 resigned and a republican took his placing making Hayes win.
It was that the democratic party wouldn't attempt to reconstruct the south and to let them have self government.
