  • The compromise of 1850The compromise of 1850 allowed the passing of the Fugitive Slave Act that required people in free states to help capture and return escaped slaves.In order to fight back against the act, Nine Northern states passed personal liberty laws that made it illegal to capture runaway slaves and made sure they would have jury trials.

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin - 1852Uncle Tom's Cabbin was written to expose the realities of slavery. It revealed how harshly slaves were treated and how cruel masters could be. This encouraged northerners to continue to ight for abolition but angered southerners because they believed the passage was lying. Opposing opinions grew stronger and further devided the country.
  • Lets arm slaves so they can fight back against their Masters!
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act a.k.a Bleeding KansasStephen Douglas proposed popular sovernty which angered northerners because states where slavery was previously banned could now vote to get it back. Many pro-slavery southerners voted illegally in Missouri to help gain more slave states. Supporters of slavery damaged businesses and killed one person. in retaliation, Abolitionist John Brown killed five men.

  • Dred Scott decisionDred Scott was a slave from Missouri he lived north of theMissouri Compromise. He became a free person by living in free territory. He took his case to court and they decided Black people were not citizens, so they could not sue in federal court and that Scott was not a free man since he was slave property. It also ruled that the Kansas-Nebraska Act and MO Compromise were unconstitutionaland they violated the 5th Amendment.
  • Harper's FerryJohn Brown led 21 men to seize the federal arsenal and distribute the weapons to slaves. They wanted to begin a slave uprising, invade the South, and end slavery. They failed horribly and Brown was hanged for treason. The Northerners viewed Brown as martyrs and Southerners were terrified and started to consider secession.

  • The Election of 1860Lincoln was elected president and southerners believed that he was evil. He vowed to stop the spread of slavery but to allow it to continue in the south. In december of 1860, southern states began to suceed, starting with south carolina.
