- The story begins with a girl named Meg Murry remembering her father's disappearance because he has been gone for 4 years. She gets teased at school for it and is embarrassed by her younger brother named Charles Wallace.
- One day Meg meets a boy named Calvin who's nice to her. She brings him to her home and talks about her father. But then suddenly 3 strangers appear in Meg's backyard and it turns out that Charles Wallace knows them. They are identified as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which. They are there to tell the kids that Meg's father is alive and they have to go find him, and he is in danger.
- Meg and along with Charles Wallace and Calvin, including the Mrs. travel or in other words tesser to a planet called Uriel. Uriel is billions of lightyears away from earth and thanks to the power of tessering. Meg talks to the flowers there and asks them if they have seen their father at all. They have seen him, but unfortunately they are being taunted by a darkness known simply as the "IT". They discuss "IT" and they decide to go to a man called The Happy medium to see if he's seen Meg's father.
