  • After the Revolution, the American economy was struggling greatly. The states did not have the money to pay back the soldiers who had fought for the freedom of their country as promised. As well as this, the states needed money to pay the federal government, so they raised tax prices. In Massachusetts, farmers suffered more than anyone else from this, they had barely any income and could not pay the unfair taxes. Over all, lots of Massachusetts citizens were enraged, some for not being payed what they deserved, and others because of the ridiculously high tax prices.
  • A former captain of the continental army, Daniel Shays, began to collect supporters and started a rebellion. They held meetings to congregate and protested against the Massachusetts government for taxing them. Some viewed Shays and his supporters and dangerous and destructive. The armies met at a major arsenal to get weapons. James Bowdoin, the Massachusetts governor, decided to organize an army to put an end to the rebellion. Then, in the winter of 1786, the state army met the rebels and shut down their attempted revolt.
  • Although James Bowdoin had quickly shut down the chaos, his courageous act was not enough to keep voters from turning against him, as they wanted a pro-debtor governor to at least lower taxes for those already in debt. This fact was true for voters everywhere, and it threatened the positions of many state leaders. Shays' Rebellion highlighted the issues that the new government could face if they didn't take action and improve the system. It brought light to the idea of fixing The Articles of Confederation and balancing the power between the federal and state governments. This eventually led to the creation of our Constitution.
