  • She was arrested and fined $10, plus $4 in court fees and when she was arrested, Rosa called E.D. Nixon, a prominent Black leader, who bailed her out of jail. Just 4 days later after her arrest, civil rights activists and their supporters worked together to start the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This was an act of protest where African Americans refused to ride city buses.
  • Although at least 75 percent of Montgomery’s bus users were African Americans, the city still wasn't complying with the protester’s demands. So, to ensure the boycott could be sustained and that they won't give up, Black leaders put together carpools, and African American taxi drivers charged only 10 cents —the same price as bus fare— for African Americans. Many Black residents chose to walk to work or other destinations and Black leaders organized regular mass meetings to keep African Americans motivated around the boycott.
  • On June 5th, a Montgomery federal court stated that any racial segregation on buses were a violation of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. It states that all citizens regardless of race, should have equal rights and protection under state and federal laws. The situation was appealed to the US Supreme Court and from December 21st, 1956, buses were integrated, and the boycott ended after 381 days.
