  • This is Constance Baker Motley. She was a civil rights activist, lawyer, and judge, and fought very hard to secure rights for Black Americans.
  • Constance went to school at Fisk University, but transferred to NYU, She then got her law degree from Columbia University. She was even hired by future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall!
  • Motley was the first woman to argue a case in front of the Supreme court. She went on to argue 12 cases in front of the Supreme Court, winning nine.
  • Motley was also the first Black woman on the New York State Senate, and was even the Manhattan Borough President -- a role that had never been held by a woman before!
  • Motley worked with activists like MLK, and even represented him in key cases in court. She was a civil rights lawyer, and focused on arguing cases that helped Black people gain rights. She helped make it so that Black and white children could go to the same schools.
  • Motley was a key figure in advancing both women's rights and Black rights. She eventually became a judge, and was able to help other Black women follow in her footsteps!
