  • Situational irony is represented in this play when John confessed his affair with Abigail. He confesses the truth, and Elizabeth lies and says there was no affair to try to protect him. Instead, this only got John in trouble.
  • Connection to McCarthyism and The Red Scare
  • Suspense is used when different people get accused for witchcraft. The girls blame innocent people for witchcraft to protect themselves. This represents suspense because it makes you wonder what will happen to everyone being accused.
  • Symbolism: The Woods
  • John Proctor is a really guilty man. He had an affair with Abigail Williams and he regrets it a lot. In court, he confesses about the affair but his wife lies about it and this causes him to be hanged.
  • The Crucible is connected to McCarthyism because they were both huge trials that had similarities. McCarthyism inspired Miller to write about the Salem Witch Trials. The accusations of communism was like the accusations of witchcraft. People thought communism would take over the country, and in The Crucible, people thought witchcraft would take over.
  • The townspeople believed the forest was a product of the devil. The forest was a symbol of a bigger issue because the girls danced in the woods and did witchcraft there. The woods is where all the problems started.
  • "Salem folk believed that the virgin forest was the Devil’s last preserve, his home base and the citadel of his final stand. To the best of their knowledge the American forest was the last place on earth that was not paying homage to God." (pg. 564)
