  • The Red Scare in the US began with the rise of the Communist state of the Soviet Union.The United States experienced robust economic growth after World War II. Civil unrest weakened the Democratic Party and their ideals, leading to increased conservatism in the 1960s, despite the growing Civil Rights Movement.
  • The states had been allies in WWII against the Axis powers, but did not trust each other nor did they have friendly relations.
  • Communist dictators rose to power and Soviets controlled much of Eastern and Central Europe, creating satellite states.
  • The US, with an emphasis on democracy, highly disliked Communism and the rise of the Soviets. 
  • There became a divide, "The Iron Curtain," between US allies in Western Europe and Soviet allies of Eastern Europe.
  • The United Nations was created in 1945, with both the US and the Soviets included. The Soviets rejected some US plans, which the US took as hostility.
  • The zone of Germany under Soviet control evolved into a new Communist state called the German Democratic Republic.
  • Truman implemented a containment policy in response to the threats of a Communist uprising in Greece, and Soviet demands for control of a water route in Turkey.The President asked Congress for economic and military aid to assist the people of Greece and Turkey against the regimes. It gained bipartisan support from Republicans and Democrats.

  • The Marshall Plan was a European recovery program for the distribution of aid to Western Europe over four years. This plan was put into place to help discontented Europeans to keep them from electing Communist leaders.

  • In 1948, the Soviets cut off all land access to Berlin. Truman ordered US planes to fly in supplies to the people of West Berlin. The massive airlift continued continued while the world waited for the outbreak of war, but Stalin didn't challenge the airlift. 
  • By 1949, the Soviets finally opened up highways to Berlin and the blockade was brought to an end. A consequence was the creation of two Germanys- the Federal Republic of Germany, a US ally, and the German Democratic Republic, a Soviet satellite.

  • Thankfully, a nuclear holocaust did not occur in the Cold War, when it very much could have. 
  • The Cold War didn't stop until the early 1990s. The Berlin Wall came down and the Soviet Union was dissolved.
