- Nana Elang, the mother of Baldo, appeared in the doorway with handful of rice straw.
- One morning in Nagrebcan. The barrio is gradually awaking but as yet no people are around.
- The puppies lay curled around their mother's paws. The mother dog stood up as the sawali door was dragged open, making a loud noise
- Baldo stood at the treshold rubbing his eyes. He is about 10 years old, stood straight on his bony legs and wearing one of his father's discarded undershirts
- When Baldo came back Nana Elaine had already prepared the rice in the pot and the pots for the mess of the vegetables and fish
- My puppy. My puppy. You are a foolish puppy.Foolish, foolish, foolish
- After stepping from the ladder, Baldo bowed down and grasped for the black-spotted puppy. He held it close to him and stroked its warm, supple body. He made contact with the dog's face.
- Get two or three burning coals and bring them home on the rice straw. Do not wave the straw in the wind. If you do, it will catch fire before you get home
