Texte du Storyboard

  • This line sets the tone for the rest of the sonnet. It introduces the narrator as someone who doesn't want his death to make others sad. It is important because it shows that the narrator isn't some heartless person who wants to leave a world full of the "vilest worms". Instead, he has so much love for the person this is about, that he'd rather they forget about him entirely.
  • No longer mourn for me when I am dead
  • This line supports the theme that every human must endure in life, that is inevitable death. We all eventually pass, and the narrator knows that when it is his time to pass, and the bell stops ringing after his passing, that one must move on with their life and not mourn him.
  • Than you shall hear surly sullen bell
  • Apostrophe is one of the poetic devices used in this sonnet. Using this poetic device pairs nicely with the daunting yet realistic tone of the sonnet. The purpose of using apostrophe is to have the reader focus on what the narrator is saying rather than any other characters. It makes the reader feel like they're reading a letter or a note that is meant for another character. This can make you feel different emotions, as in this sonnet, the feeling you can get is despair or remorse for the narrator.
  • The TURN
  • The Turn in sonnet 71, is in line 6. The sonnet shifts and shows a softer side to the narrator rather than his previously dark demeanor. Comparing humans to 'vile worms' and being very descriptive about his death. Saying things such as not to mourn about his death and thinking of the final toll of the bell at his funeral. After the turn, the sonnet goes to a much sweeter tone. For example, in line 12 where it states, "But let your love even with my life decay;" showing the more compassionate side of the narrator by showing how he doesn't want people to hurt because of his inevitable death.
  • This line shows how the narrator is prepared for his death and would like for the person he is addressing to stop loving him. He doesn't want his death to affect them, therefore, he wants their love for him to decay, like his life.
  • But let your love even with my life decay:

  • And mock you with me after I am gone.
  • This line is the concluding line, and it gives the narrator another reason to ask this person to forget about him after he passes. He doesn't want this person to feel any type of grief. He doesn't want them to shed any tears for him nor have people mock them with his death.
