- Mrs. Schächter believes she sees fire out of the train window. Several times, she screams out. However, to the others, it is only a vision.
- When they arrive in Berkinau, all on board see great flames rising from the smokestack spewing with ashes. The destruction they see is the crematoria that the Nazis use to commit genocide.
- Eli described the night before being deported. Elie and his family were not able to rest for the fear of the unknown choked their ability to sleep.
- Elie and his father observed the Nazi's unloading a truckload of children into a ditch and burning them. He described watch the flaming corpses light up the night sky at Birkenau.
