  • Let's talk about learning management systems. They can be beneficial in the classroom.
  • Learning Management Systems are used for online and remote learning. The term LMS refers to server-based software that controls access to and delivery of resources that are online through a web browser. The great part of this is that the curriculum can be delivered online, either entirely or parts of it. Teachers can plan activities, materials, quizzes and more while keeping track of student progress and providing feedback. Some common features of LMS are discussion boards, blogs, wikis and more. This platform eliminates the need for its users to report to several different tools (Wichadee, ??)
  • The first LMS I will discuss is Moodle. What are some pros and cons? How can it be used in the classroom?
  • Moodle the heart of teaching and learning services in education. This free platform is efficient, cost-effective, and secure. Moodle has advanced scoring and grading system, time management, student authentication. Its navigation includes features to move back and forth on pages, random ordering of pages, shuffling of questions and choices for students, as well as date and time restrictions. Moodle can be used with any class size. A few of the supported tools and activities are glossaries, wikis, assignments, quizzes, blogs, and messaging. One con is that Moodle has limited usage as an examination platform (Ally, 2022).
  • Blackboard is another type of LMS. Most importantly is for educators to become familiar with this platform and students with the software. Features like discussion boards, podcasts and email allows easy communication between educator and students. Some excellent features for students include discussing and writing at the same time, adding personal comments to a discussion, and revising any previous class from teacher's notes. In addition, students can download soft copies of notes anytime. However, Blackboard learn is expensive compared to other LMS platforms (Alturise, 2020).
  • Next let's talk about an LMS called Blackboard. What are some features of it?
  • A third type of LMS is called Edmodo. Let's take a look at this platform.
  • Edmodo is another popular LMS. This platform is a safe place to encourage cooperation and feedback for students. Some positive attributes mentioned include customized learning that is self-paced for students and being user friendly. In fact, this free LMS is often referred to as Facebook for Schools. Edmodo has easy access to resources and support facilities for the online activities included. One drawback of this platform, however, is that the user interface is often busy for teachers. Also, studies mentioned the need for better options in Edmodo for collaboration (Ates, 2018).
  • SO.....how do you choose????
  • With SO many options of learning management systems, you have to choose the right one for you. Consider your needs. Think about the user experience-who will be using your LMS? How will it be integrated with other systems you use? What is your budget? What content will you be sharing and what formats would best support this? Finally, what will your assessment and report needs be?
