  • The book starts with Abe telling his grandson, Jacob about his past.
  • Abe did all these amazing things like riding on horseback across the desert.
  • He also fought in the war and knew about guns! Jacob was amazed by all Abe’s stories since he had never left Florida.
  • Sitting at a table, Jacob and Abe looked at maps and prepared for fake expeditions.
  • Jacobs mother is telling him that none of Abes stories were true.
  • Abe had to live in a children's home in Wales to hide from the monsters... or so he said.
  • Jacob had trouble falling asleep ever since he heard Abe's stories about the monsters.
  • The children lived a happy life in a children's home where the monsters couldn't get them, and they were protected by a wise, old bird smoking a pipe. Abe talked about how the children were all peculiar.
  • Abe brings Jacob a matchbox of old pictures of the children for him to see.
  • The first picture was one of an invisible boy named Millard, who dose not have a head.
  • The second picture is of a crown wearing girl who is levitating, they had to tie her down to keep her from floating away. 
  • The third picture is of a boy named Victor who is lifting a boulder above his head. 
  • The last picture is of a boy with a face painted on the back of his head... but the face is real. 
  • A kid named Robbie began to tease Jacob about believing his gandfather's stories. 
  • Jacob told his grandfather that he didn't believe his stories any more.
  • Jacob's dad was telling him that Abe's stories weren't lies but changed... they were like horror stories!
  • Abe had to escape Poland before the war. He never saw his family again.
  • The monsters were German Nazi's according to Jacob's father.
  • Abe's stories seemed magical and the children peculiar, but Jewish orphans of war. they didn't have special powers but escaped the gas chambers.
  • After that, Jacob started felling sorry for Abe and the life he had as a child.
