  • Ganesh's Orders
  • Shiva's Rage
  • Parvati's Mourning
  • One day, when the Goddess Parvati was taking a bath, she took some turmeric paste and made a boy out of it. Parvati accepted the boy as her son, told the boy to stand by the door of her washroom, and told him to not let anyone in until she had completed her bath.
  • Nandi Get's An Elephant's Head
  • It so happened that when the little boy was guarding the door, Lord Shiva, Parvati's husband, had finished his prayers in the Himalayas. The boy stopped Shiva from entering, and told Shiva that his mother was bathing. Shiva became furious that he was being stopped from entering his own house, and he severed the head of the little boy.
  • Parvati's Fear
  • Just then, Parvati came back out of her bath. She was devastated to find her son lying on the floor, and she asked Shiva to bring him back to life. After learning the boy's true identity, Shiva was overcome with guilt. Although he could not join the head and body back together, he could join the the body with another head.
  • Ganesh Becomes A God
  • Shiva called out the bull, Nandi, and told her to bring back the head of the first creature she found. So Nandi brought back the head of a elephant calf, and Shiva placed the head of the elephant on the boy and brought him back to life.
  • Though Parvati was overjoyed to see her son alive, she feared he might be mocked because of his appearance. Nobody would worship a god that had a head of a elephant and a body of a human! Shiva knew what was troubling Parvati. To relieve her fears, Shiva called all of the gods and asked them to each bless the little boy.
  • Thus, Shiva named the boy Ganesh, and all of the gods blessed Ganesh. Today, Ganesh is the first god that you pray to in any prayers, and he is the remover of all obstacles, just like trying to remove Shiva from being in Parvati's way. So any time that you have some obstacle in your way, make sure to pray to Ganesh!
