  • Chiapas Mexico
  • Chiapas Mexico
  • In 1993, Indigenous communities in eastern Chiapas Mexico grew tired of living under the authority of the Mexican government as they were constantly being discriminated against. Especially after the NAFTA agreement which harms them further.
  • After finally having enough they form a group and called themselves Zapatistas. They all wore masks to cover their faces while also symbolizing their unity. They specifically wanted to have the authority to conduct how they worked their land and decide who benefits from the labor. They wanted land reform and they wanted to be self reliant.
  • The day NAFTA was signed into law, the Zapatistas attacked and took control of 4 Chiapas cities.
  • The Mexican army deployed their military to take back the land and maintain order. This armed conflict lasted 12 days, in which the mexican army crushed the rebellion and killed many of their supporters, once killing 45 people including women and children.
  • Despite being crushed, the Zapatistas gained the support of the people. They forced the government to recognize the autonomy of the Zapatistas which meant the group finally got what they wanted: control over their own land and the right to govern themselves
  • The Zapatistas now provide for their community by giving the children access to an education and allowing them to experience what it means to be an indigenous Mexican.
