- John is retired, lives alone in a 65+ community. He has never used a computer and doesn't see the need to, even though his family bought him an iPad and set up Wi-fi.John's children live overseas. He socialises playing bowls and going to activities run by the housing community.
- John can't pay his rates at the library with a cheque anymore.He is confused and agitated.
- You won't take my cheque? How can I pay?
- A librarian and some savvy seniors give a talk about internet banking at his 65+ housing community.John decides to give one-on-one classes a go, because he has to change his banking method and a tutor his age won't confuse him with jargon and going too fast.
- John goes to the library to set up his learning plan with the librarian.John is a little sceptical, but the librarian listened to his situation and learning expectations.The librarian will match John with a trained peer tutor. John hopes they get along.
- John meets his peer tutor at the library.Lesson 1 goes well on his iPad and he has hard copies of what he achieved to take home and re-read. The tutor took things at John's speed which he liked.John and his tutor decide to continue meeting in John's home.
- If I can do it, you can do it too!
- Weekly lessons at home have been going well. Learning something new is easier when you feel comfortable. John is feeling more confident and has signed up for online banking.Mid-week roadblocks have been solved by attending the Tech Drop In session at his library where a librarian explains any queries or problems.Other people John knows are often there and they share how they are progressing over a cup of tea. Soon John will have finished his personalised lesson plan and will receive a certificate. He can't wait to show his bowling mates.
