  • Yes, that island right there is quite mysterious. It is named Ship Trap Island, and sailors all, dread its existence.
  • How could I have fallen off my boat... Oh no! Pistol Shots from the island.

  • These are the main characters introduced during this story.
  • That was quite a tough swim to the island, though at least those pistol shots indicated human life! Look there, a mansion!
  • The introduction of an island, termed "Ship Trap Island." This is important as we know the setting and a potential foreshadowing of future conflicts.
  • Yes, my eyes were not playing tricks on me, this mansion is huge. Now look, some movement inside...
  • We are now introduced to our first minor conflict. It is that Rainsford has fallen off of his yacht, and is stranded. This is an example of person vs nature.
  • I have read your book about hunting Snow Leopards in Tibet. It is a pleasure, my name is General Zaroff, please make yourself at home.
  • My name is Sanger Rainsford of New York, I fell off my yacht and I am hungry.
  • Rainsford makes it to the infamous Ship Trap Island. He investigates the beach and finds dead animals with bullets inside of them. He knows there is human life for sure at that point.
  • Rainsford eventually stumbles upon a huge mansion after investigating the island. He sees lights and movement inside of the house and is overjoyed. At this point he was extremely tired from his swim to the island.
  • He enters the home and is met by a Cossack man named General Zaroff. He explains that he owns the island and is an avid hunter himself, similar to that of Mr. Rainsford.
