  • The first Dutch settlers formed a settlement in Fort Nassau in 1614. Over the next several years, more Dutch settlements developed, until eventually the English took over in the mid 1600s.
  • The French and Indian War

  • New York became a state on July 26, 1788.
  • The French and the English took sides with different Native American tribes and fought over the land. The war ended in 1763 with an English victory.
  • The Erie Canal
  • New York was the 11th state to be admitted into the Union on July 26, 1788.
  • Ellis Island
  • The Erie Canal created a route between the Atlantic Ocean and New York City to the Great Lakes, making the transportation of goods and products faster and more efficient.
  • Ellis Island opens and immigrants from all over the world begin coming to America. It is located in New York Harbor and the busiest immigration center in the United States.
