St. Augustine
In 1513, Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon arrived in what is now Florida, hoping to discover the Fountain of Youth.
Statehood
The oldest permanent city in the U.S., St. Augustine, is established in 1565.
Space
Florida became the 27th state on March 3, 1845. After joining the Confederacy in 1861, and then losing the Civil War, Florida was readmitted into the Union in 1868.
NASA's fist manned spaceflight takes off from Cape Canaveral on May 5th. Navy Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr. is launched aboard the Freedom 7, and is the first American astronaut to travel into space.

Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom opens in Orlando, Florida, and eventually becomes the most popular tourist destination in the world.
Hurricane Andrew
Hurricane Andrew, a powerful and destructive Category 5 Atlantic hurricane, struck Florida, the Bahamas, and Louisiana in August. It is the most destructive hurricane that Florida has ever seen.
