  • In 1089 Lanfranc dies. William decides not to replace him. Instead he manages the church property himself and makes money from it. This continues the poor relationship and struggle between the king and the Papacy
  • 1093-1109
  • In 1093, WIlliam II nearly dies. He believes he has not been pious (religious) enough and not show enough love or the Church. He decides to compromise with the Church and appoints Anselm as the Archbishop of Canterbury to redeem him for not acting as a pious King. Anselm was the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109.
  • 1095-97
  • A meeting was held in 1095 (The Council of Rockingham) where Anselm was urged by other bishops that he should be loyal to the King. Anselm refused and believed that he could not be judged by the King's council and that his loyalty lay with the Pope first. Relations between the King and the Church broke down again.

  •  Anselm fell out with William II over the Investiture controversy and went into exile. Anselm believed that he could loyally serve both William and the Pope but this angered William who accused him of treason for placing his loyalty to the Pope over him.
  •  There was a brief agreement at the Council of Rockingham between the king and the church but this deteriorated again by 1097. In 1097 Anselm flees to Rome. Pope Urban II threatened William with excommunication after he prevented Anselm from holding Church Councils. As a result William decides not to appoint a new Archbishop of Canterbury and poor relations with the papacy continues.
