Jack is a failed writer who has struggled with alcoholism but has violent behavioral outbursts. Wendy is his wife and Danny their son.Danny is a child who has visions and can sometimes hear people's thoughts.

- Jack is a failed writer who has struggled with alcoholism but has violent behavioral outbursts. Wendy is his wife and Danny their son. Danny is a child who has visions and can sometimes hear people's thoughts.
- Room 217
- Thanks to a rich friend, Jack has one more chance: a job as winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Mountains. Overlook shuts down over the winter and the hotel is completely isolated from the outside world.
- The hammer
- Dick Halloran, the hotel chef, recognizes Danny as someone with "the shining." He warns Danny that some bad things have happened at the hotel over the years, and it might make him see things, but what he sees can't really hurt him.
- The fire
- Danny wanders into room 217 and is attacked by a dead woman in a bathtub.
- Jack talks to ghost-people at the hotel bar, who give him alcohol. He attacks Wendy and Danny with a hammer, saying he needs to give them their “medicine”.
- Wendy and Danny are able to escape when the boiler explodes, destroying the hotel.
