  • So, i think i should prepare you for your baby with Vygotsky's theory.
  • Vygotsky's theory, or the sociocultural perspective, says cognitive development is inseparable from social and cultural contexts and children are products of their culture.
  • Intersubjectivity is the social nature of cognitive development (shared understanding).
  • Cognitive growth results from children's involvement in structured activities with others who are more skilled than they are. This is known as guided participation.
  • Differences between what one can do and can't do alone or with assistance is the zone of proximal development. A child knowing how to write full sentences is outside of their zone of proximal development, if they only know how to write letters randomly.
  • When a child is learning, or performing a new skill, they use private speech and inner speech to guide themselves. Private speech is comments intended to regulate their own behavior. Inner speech is their thoughts. Scaffolding is what the more skilled individual uses to match assistance to the learner's needs.
  • Vygotsky's theory differs from Piaget's theory in schools. In Piaget's theory, he believes children are the scientists and learn by exploring in their own way, leaving it open for the child to teach themselves. Vygotsky's theory emphasizes the role skilled individuals play in a child's process of learning something new and the assistance they provide to reach the new skill.
