- "I couldn't find the box with Bera-Bera, and I was convinced he was lost. Naturally, I had to have hysterics."
- "Because, there's only thirty-one Japanese people in the whole town, and there''s more than four thousand people in town, and four thousand divided by thirty-one is...a lot more of them than us. Do you understand?"
- "Shizukani!"
- "She liked peace and quiet."
- "My uncle talked and talked, and my father listened and listened."
- This scene shows that Katie cries easily and cares strongly about little things. Even though she cries about a lot of things, she is still a strong little girl. Not just that, but she is also a happy person who becomes joyful by the smallest things. She doesn't keep an attitude and she always listens to her older sister, Lynn.
- This scene shows how mature and responsible Lynn is. She is going out of her way to sit with Katie and have an important discussion with her about racism. She tells Katie to let her know if any of the kids at school decide to be racist towards her and if they are, then she'll stick up for her. She's straight forward towards people and she always gets to the point.
- "Gaaaaaaah!"
- "Even when he wasn't talking, he made a lot of noise, clearing his throat and sniffing and tapping his fingers."
- This shows that the mother likes it to be quiet and calm. She loves her daughters and shes a great mother, but she likes time to her self. She likes to keep them out of danger and out of trouble and she only wants the best for them. The mother is a very fragile, caring, and loving person.
- This scene shows how the father is more of a listener than a talker. He is patient, calm, quiet, and kind. He teaches his daughters things that their mother would never teach, and he is always proud of his daughters, no matter what they do. He's a hard worker who works long shifts, and all he wants is for his wife to be happy.
- This scene shows that the uncle can be a very loud person. He could just be sitting there and he would be making a lot of noise by clicking his ears or clearing his throat. He talks all the time and sometimes out of nowhere he would clap his hands really loudly for no particular reason. He loves his brother and treats the mother like a fragile glass jar. He is an overall fun person.
