Texte du Storyboard

  • My cousin who has settled west has sent a letter and speaks of the great things there!
  • Let's migrate west, so we can have our own land and start an amazing life.
  • There's no room for these Northerners, we have no resources.
  •
  • Before the 1870's "The Great Plains" was an open range where Indigenous people resided. Due to adapting to their conditions. Natives on this land were excellent horse riders and had amazing archery skills.
  • At least the windmill is helping you pull water from the well
  • I thought your cousin spoke of great things on this land. I'm hot, tired and thirsty.
  • We're going to have to make do. This will all pay off soon. You'll see.
  • In order to strengthen the country and increase western migration. President Lincoln signed the Homestead act in 1862. Where future settlers could work in order to improve the harsh conditions of the Great Plains and have potential ownership after five years of working on the land.
  • Further encouraging western Migration, the Transcontinental railroad transported people, cattle, and crops, making it easier to settle on the land. Causing skirmishes between the Northerners and the Indigenous people on the land which led to the 25 year long Indian Wars.
  • I have a feeling this doesn't end here.
  • I told you it would all work out sweetheart. Look at what we've created together.
  • Settling on the land was not easy for the Northerners. Facing new conditions they were forced to work very hard in order to have access to food and water. Which led to the inventions of groundwater wells, dug hundreds of feet into the ground. Which was powered by the also newly invented windmills that helped increase production.
  • Western Settlers found a way to make living on the Great Plains truly feel like home. Unlike the Natives who lived in easily transportable tents. Settlers created sod houses made of grass, thin branches, and hay in order to protect themselves from the weather and animals. They also placed barbed wire to keep their property safe and to help enclose the once open range.
  • The effects of settlement came out well for the Western settlers, increasing their cattle, crops, and introduced new work and tools such as the steel plow.
