In 1606, King James I granted a charter to start a new coloy.
YOU MAY GO AND START A COLONY
The Virginia Company sent 144 settlers in 3 ships in 1606.
GOODBYE ENGLAND
In April of 1607, the settlers arrived at Chesapeake Bay and sailed up the river to their new colony.
THIS RIVER SHALL BE CALLED JAMES AND THE COLONY JAMESTOWN AFTER OUR KING
Jamestown
The colony survived it's first 2 years thanks to Captain John Smith who traded with the Powhatan. In 1609, he was injured and had to return to England.
THOSE WHO DO NOT WORK SHALL NOT EAT
Because Smith was the one who traded with the Powhatan, the colony ran out of food. The winter of 1609-1610 was called the "Starving Time"
WE ARE SOOOOO HUNGRY
Somehow, Jamestown survived this horrible time, and soon new colonists arrived to replace those who had died.
