- Exposition
- Holden is 16-year-old boy who is currently in his school Pencey Prep. He finds this school really phony compared to what the school advertises. He thinks everyone is a phony. Holden also wears a red hunting hat that symbolizes the isolation he feels from society.
- Holden: Yeah, yeah I'll write your god damn composition for you.
- Thanks Holden. Just as long as it's descriptive as hell.
- Get off of me your moron.
- Conflict
- Holden and Stradlater get into a intense argument which ends up with both of them getting physical with each other. He later on plans to leave his school and try to find his way in life. A theme that occurs from here goes back to how Holden
- You asked for it, God damn it.
- Rising action
- After the fight with Stradlater, Holden decides to leave Pency Prep and start a "better life" in New York. Holden takes a cab to one of the bars he used to go to and questions the driver where all the ducks go during the winter. The ducks are in a way a symbol of freedom as Holden wants to leave his depressing life but can't seem to.
