  • For the Spanish, there weren’t many push-factors for their migration. It was mostly pull-factors that got Spaniards moving across the Atlantic. The Spanish were looking for what we call the Three Gs…God, Gold, and Glory. In other words, they wanted to spread their Roman Catholic religious beliefs to anybody they came in contact with, they wanted to get rich by finding gold or other valuables, and they wanted to gain fame.
  • we want land
  • who are you?
  • Once the Spanish realized that America wasn’t Asia they started sending conquistadors to the islands of the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The name conquistador might give you some knowledge on how the Spanish treated the new land. Conquistador means conqueror, and the Spanish were all about conquering the new territory and making it their own. While the Spanish DID work with some of the native people in America, there was no mistaking who was now in charge. The Spanish began forcing the natives to become Catholic Christians. They made many of the natives servants if not slaves. They used the natives to help look for gold or other ways to make money.
  • With the help of several smaller native groups the Spanish conquistadors conquered the Aztec and Inca, and took control of Central and South America. Once the area was conquered, all natives were treated as second-class people with fewer rights than the Spanish. Eventually huge numbers of natives would be killed by the Spanish, not so many by gun or sword, but most by diseases. The Spanish had unknowingly brought diseases with them across the Atlantic. These diseases did not effect the Spanish because they were more immune after centuries of exposure, but the natives were dropping like flies, because they had no previous exposure, and therefore had no natural immunity.
  • After the natives had been conquered more Spanish settlers began to come to America. Eventually almost 2 million Spaniards would make the trip across the Atlantic. This migration made tremendous changes to the region.
  • First, an estimated 80% of the natives of Central and South America died as a result of disease brought by the Spanish, so the region was much less densely populated. Second, a new Latin American “mix” of race was formed between Spanish and Native Americans as Spanish soldiers and native women were married and had children. This mix of races also led to a new Latin culture which was a mix of native and Spanish.
